Skin Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric, often referred to as "Indian Saffron", is a golden spice derived from the Curcuma longa plant native to Southeast Asia. Turmeric spice is obtained by drying and grinding the plant's root into a fine powder.

Turmeric is rich in antioxidant compounds (including polyphenols, flavonoids and curcuminoids), fatty acids and vitamins (including Vitamin C) which are all beneficial for our skin health. The majority of Turmeric's skin benefits, however, come from it's compound curcumin which helps protect our skin from free radicals. Free radicals, also known as 'reactive oxygen species' develop when we are exposed to environmental aggressors such as UV radiation or air pollution. Other unhealthy habits, such as smoking, also allow free radicals to build up on the skin resulting in visible changes known collectively as oxidative stress. This results in fine lines and skin dullness to name a few.

Research suggests that the skin benefits of Turmeric are numerous and adding it to our skin care routine results in a more youthful and healthy complexion!

  • Improves the appearance of skin irregularities such as blotchiness, redness and uneven skin tone

  • Helps reduce visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles

  • Helps reduce inflammation underneath our skin tissue

  • Helps to firms up skin texture

  • Helps our skin retain moisture
